The Future of Your Telephone

Your desk wouldn’t seem complete without a telephone, the device we have grown so accustomed to. Yet, that telephone may be heading in the same direction as your fax machine – another piece of technological wizardry that a mere 20 years ago no self-respecting business would be without.

It’s interesting that most business cards still include telephone and fax numbers but in reality how many connections are now being made texting, chatting and through social messaging? For example, did you know that in 2009, for the first time in history, the amount of data sent via mobile devices exceeded the number of voice messages?

What does all this mean to our industry that offers people the opportunity of meeting face to face when we don’t even know what our customers sound like or we have not picked up valuable nuances that they may be revealed in a phone call? The question we need to consider is how closely linked voice communications is to face to face.

I read an interesting article titled “The Call of the Future” by Tom Vanderbilt which discusses how the telephone became a large part of our daily lives and hints at the role it will play in the future.

What’s your prediction for the future of voice communications?

How will the demise of the telephone affect our industry?
