Literature is filled with information on the subject of leadership. Recently I read an article in Forbes magazine by contributor Cheryl Snapp, titled “Mentally Strong People: The Thirteen Things They Avoid.” We assume that mental strength is a prerequisite for those in leadership positions so understanding the things these people avoid can be a valuable lesson for the rest of us.

This article is also timely as it ties into the theme of the upcoming UFI CEO Forum (www.ufi.org/ucf2014) which will be held in Paris Feb. 10 – 12. The theme of this year’s Forum is “Leadership in times of change.”

The article lists thirteen points that leaders attempt to avoid. This is a good checklist for each of us to use as we strive to be the best at what we do.

1. Don’t waste time feeling sorry for yourself.
2. Don’t give away power.
3. Don’t shy away from change.
4. Don’t waste energy on things you can’t control.
5. Don’t worry about pleasing others.
6. Don’t fear taking calculated risks.
7. Don’t dwell on the past.
8. Don’t make the same mistakes over and over.
9. Don’t resent other people’s success.
10. Don’t give up after failure.
11. Don’t fear alone time.
12. Don’t feel the world owes you anything.
13. Don’t expect immediate results.

The article is a good read for all of us who are in – or want to be – in a leadership position.
