A hash tag is created to focus Twitter discussion on an event and to encourage exhibitors and visitors to use it to communicate. While some exhibitors and visitors are responsive the vast majority are not. The reason could lie in their lack of familiarity with how a hash tag works, lack of time or suffering from writers’ block and not knowing what to say within the 140 character limit.
I read an interesting post on TSNN’s blog called “4 Things You Can Tweet About When Attending or Exhibiting at a Trade Show,” by author Trace Cohen. He has taken the fear out of tweeting by suggesting topics that would be relevant to an exhibition’s audience. Some of his suggestions include: pictures of products, interesting facts learned from a speaker or thoughts on the exhibition.
If you want to increase the number of conversations around your next event, read Cohen’s article and see if it sparks some new ideas of your own. Then, most importantly, share your ideas with all your stakeholders with specific guidelines on how to tweet.
