In the May 4th issue of the Financial Times, www.ft.com/comment/editorial/LatinAmerica’s economic boom, there was an interesting article titled, Latin America’s Economic Boom.”
While the Latin American countries with the exception of Venezuela fared reasonably well during the recession, the problem according to the article may lie in complacency.
The article attributes most of its resilience to near zero interest rates, healthy business in Asia and a measure of luck.
Brazil has always been the economic engine of South America but there seem to be tremendous opportunities in Columbia, Chile, Peru and several of the Central American countries.
It’s time that we open the discussion to opportunities in Latin America. Where are the opportunities? What are some of the challenges you see?
I was very excited by what I saw last month during the AFIDA/UNIFIB Congress in Quito. There clearly is a lot going on in that part of the world in what is already in many ways a sophisticated industry.
I guess that, as always when we’re looking from afar at another part of the world, it’s important not to generalise. The scale of opportunity in Colombia and Peru is clearly very different to that in the region’s giant, Brazil or a market like Argentina.
As Reed’s Marco Giberti told delegates during UFI’s March Asia Seminar, international organisers who are creative and are willing to adapt effectively to local market conditions have a good opportunity to thrive in Latin America. He said “It’s about tropicalizing the right ideas in the right way”. UFI members can download his presentation in the members section of the UFI website (www.ufi.org).
