Okay, I confess. I read Dear Lucy in the Financial Times. Putting your potential disappointment in me aside, there was an interesting problem a writer recently reported that caught my attention.
When the writer’s boss takes his annual holiday, he leaves the writer in charge but the boss carries his PDA with him and stays in touch with the office from his vacation destination. As much as five times a day, the writer can expect a message from his micro-managing boss. When the boss returns from holiday he seems to believe that unless he had stayed in touch, the writer wouldn’t have been able to manage and everything would have fallen apart. Sound familiar?
Time off in our industry is crucial. Exhibition management is not a nine-to-five job where one day is as predictable as the next. It requires an iron will and incredible stamina to maintain the high standards we strive.
But, we are only human which means we need to stop, take a deep breath and reconnect with family and loved ones and do the things we like doing – it’s called vacation.
Living in a connected world has put one more barrier in our path. The solution, in my opinion, is not rocket science; it comes down to two common sense actions:
- Delegate responsibility to people you trust then back off and let them do their job.
- Leave your PDA at home.

My favorite quote from deep thinker-Alfred E. Newman- “What, me Worry?
