We broadcast that one of the benefits of attending a fair or conference is the ability to network with colleagues as if it were something everyone eagerly looks forward to doing. Yet, the reality is that many people are shy, quiet and simply uncomfortable walking into a room filled with strangers.

– Rather than attempting to break into an existing conversation approach people who are standing alone

– Resist the temptation to launch into a pitch.

When the networker wants to disengage Grubbs suggests

– Introduce the person you are talking to someone you know,

– Suggest you both go for refreshments or

– Simply say, “It was nice to meet you, will you please excuse me?”
