It’s the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center Buildings in New York. During the past decade the world has developed a terrorist phobia. People around the world want to be assured that when they are in large crowded places, like a fair or exhibition, someone has looked at the issue of security.
In a recent blog post by Dan Petrovic called, What Event Organizers Need to Know About Security Planning, three basic steps are outlined:
- Threat Assessment. When you are planning the event, ensure you have carefully looked at the facility, size of crowd, and the potential security weaknesses.
- Making the Plan. The plan will take two things into account: Deterrence which will includes such things as sufficient lighting, uniformed guards and camera surveillance, and Prevention which includes such things as barricades or metal detectors.
- Hiring the Right People. The crucial question is whether the on-site security provided by the facility is sufficient or whether outsourcing security to a professional firm is a necessary option.
Security is the new reality and Petrovic’s posting is a good primer.
