Scientists have stated that people are social animals. In fact having strong social connections improves health and extends life span. But, can too much socializing be overwhelming? If the answer to this is “yes, then we in the exhibition business are partly responsible. Too much social stimulation may be part of the problem with people who attend our conferences, complain of information overload or can’t wait until the end of the day when they can escape into the solitude of their hotel rooms. Even the comic book hero Superman had his Fortress of Solitude.
Imagine planning a conference where you provided space for people to take a well-deserved break to enjoy a bit of silence; a soundproof space, comfortably appointed where cell-phones, texting and talking were forbidden. This is different than the traditional exhibitor or visitor’s lounge. It is a place that is totally silent. Would a space like this give attendees an opportunity to recharge themselves so the balance of their trip on the trade fair floor or attending the next workshop would be more rewarding?
I have never run across a planned quiet space such as I am describing, but I present to you an idea that might be well appreciated by your future attendees.
Let me know if you think a quiet room makes sense.
