The online retailer Amazon has changed the way people shop online. Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos credits part of its success to the way Amazon hires its staff. In 1998 Bezos wrote, “It would be impossible to produce results in an environment as dynamic as the Internet without extraordinary people.”
We are all aware of the importance hiring the right people has on the overall success of our events. But with the influx of Gen X and Millennials who are different in so many ways from their Baby Boomer parents; the challenge of hiring right the first time has never been as great. In a recent post on Mashables.com, Bezos poses three crucial questions when hiring for a postion at Amazon :
1. Will you admire this person?
Bezos wants to ensure that his managers admire the people they bring onto their teams.
2. Will this person raise the average level of effectiveness of the group they’re entering?
Bezos envisions that each new hire would fight instead of contribute to entropy. He asks them to visualize the company five years from now.
3. Along what dimensions might this person be a superstar?
While this does not necessarily relate to a work experience, Bezos finds that when people excel at non-related activities they often bring excellence to their workplace.
It’s a great post that provides a lot of food for thought.
