On May 11 we began a discussion based on the five keys to happiness in your work developed by University of Illinois Professor Ed Diener.
Recently I read a book on the same subject titles Happiness Now, written by Robert Holder who is Director of the Happiness Project and Success Intelligence and based in London.
Holden says that “over 50% of the modern workforce does not feel aligned, engaged or inspired.” One of the reasons is what Holden calls the “manic Society.” This is a society where we live and work faster at the expense of living better.
One of his lessons he teaches is that workers require a genuine commitment to their corporate and personal goals. They need to know they are contributing. One of the questions they need answers to is “How can I add value today?”
In an industry that is fraught with last minute changes, unavoidable challenges and an ever changing marketplace, happy workers need to have a better fit. When they feel better they stay longer and perform at above average pace.
It’s a great lesson for ourselves and those who work for us? Is your staff happy?
