Toronto, Canada’s Allstream Centre has become a role-model among North American sustainability initiatives. Dianne Young is the Centre’s Chief Executive Officer and will be one of the presenters at the upcoming Sustainable Development Focus meeting in Geneva on December 11th.

I asked Dianne what she learned from her experience with the Allstream Centre that would be helpful to other organizations and facilities. She answered,

“My advice would be to started simple and look at operations and power off or reduce power where you can. It is then easier to design programs and green power technologies to address the lower power base. What we learned about waste diversion was to begin with a full audit of the waste stream which means counting every piece of paper or object in the waste bin. Once that is done it was so much easier to design a diversion program.

“If we had it to over again we would not try to fit our program into a broad based government initiative as it did not fit well into the event business model.”
