A message from UFI President Anbu Varathan

Dear colleagues and friends, Normally at this time of year, the show season reaches one of the annual peaks around the world. Yet, one year into the COVID pandemic, venues around the world are serving as vaccination centres and emergency hospitals still in many cases, rather than welcoming show attendees. At UFI, we are tracking the recovery of exhibitions and business events. Where shows have taken place, exhibitors and visitors have expressed their satisfaction with attending shows, as well as [...]

This series of online sessions will invite friends of the exhibition industry to share their insights, knowledge and experiences of how to reopen events, to support others along the journey of reopening. The project is a positive sign to the global exhib [...]

#ChoosetoChallenge –This year’s International Women’s Day and Exhibitions

#ChoosetoChallenge is this year’s International Women’s Day (#IWD21) theme. With the global workforce makeup of between 60-70% being women, with a less than representational number being in high level jobs, here’s a list of what we as an industry – and personally - can do going forward: Challenge yourself to say thank you more often. Challenge your company to hire and promote a more diverse workforce when positions open up. Challenge your day-to-day mentality. This time of COVID-19 has forced us [...]

Equality in Exhibitions for International Women’s Day 2021

We strongly believe in promoting diversity and inclusion in the exhibition industry, and we’re very pleased to be recognising International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021. Industry Voices The official theme of IWD 21 is “Choose to Challenge,” and we wanted to give people from the industry that opportunity to share their vision for equality in the exhibition industry. We asked people “What could equality look like in the exhibition industry?” and this is what they said... UFI Connects We are also pleased [...]

A message from UFI President Anbu Varathan

Dear colleagues, dear friends, Beginning of February, UFI released figures stating the impact of COVID-19 on the global exhibition economy in 2020. COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the exhibition industry all over the world. However, shows are being organised again in safe and secure environments. Hopefully, with the first rollout of vaccines, we will be able to meet again, face-to-face. As I said before, the global economy is expected to see a significant recovery this year. UFI, on its [...]

German trade fair industry demands concept for re-start

The trade fair industry demands a timely perspective for its new start as a result of the Conference of the Federal States’ Prime Ministers  scheduled for 3 March 2021. Exactly one year ago, the first exhibitions had to be cancelled due to Corona; since the beginning of March 2020, the industry has been at a standstill - with a brief interruption. Part of the re-start is to reclassify exhibitions as business platforms, in accordance with the decision of the federal and state governments on 6 May [...]

On Long-Term Views and Resilience – What the California Redwoods Can Teach Us

In January I went on a road trip to the Northern California Redwoods (USA) located near the Pacific Ocean coast, about a five-hour drive north of San Francisco. For those of you who may be unfamiliar, the Redwoods are some of the oldest living beings on the planet ranging anywhere from 800-1200 years or even more, soaring on average 320 feet or 100 meters tall. Some of the taller trees recorded are in excess of 420 feet, 128 meters. Why am I talking about the California Redwoods? Here’s why: The [...]

Coming Out Of Your Shell

Mash Media MD Julian Agostini reflects on the shell scheme model after a close encounter with the dog’s dinner… On my daily walk the other day, I narrowly avoided stepping in some dog excrement. And, after my instant irritation at the careless dog owner had subsided, along with the relief that I wouldn’t spend the afternoon hosing off my Italian boots, it occurred to me how unusual accidents of this nature are these days. Certainly, there was a time in my youth that coming home or turning up at [...]

COVID-19 and its Impact on 2020

UFI recently released the impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 global exhibition industry with its 26th Global Barometer. It may be summed up in one word: OUCH! By all accounts, 2020 was a painful year of severe contraction for the industry – down by 68% from 2019’s figures. As one could expect, profits were also down in 2020, ranging from 47% in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, 50% in North America, to 58% in the Middle East & Africa, and 64% in Central and South America.
